OâKeeffe, Georgia (1887â1986)
An American artist known especially for her magnified paintings of flowers. Although Georgia OâKeeffe began her artistic career as a painter of watercolor landscapes, she soon turned to the flowers she had loved since childhood as her subject matter. By the time she was in her midthirties and married to the famous photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, she had developed her own signature styleâpainting now primarily in oilsâof portraying flowers as she wanted people to see them, in all their magnified beauty. It is often eye opening for people to look at a flower for the first time through a magnifying lens and be able to observe all of its fine detail. OâKeeffe saw this beauty and wanted to share it with the viewer by painting flowers on a large scale. She is best known for her stylized, sensual portrayals of both common and exotic flowers, but her âportraitsâ of calla lilies (Zantedeschia aethiopica), the related jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum), and jimsonweed (Datura stramonium) are among her most widely recognized works. OâKeeffe painted these flowers many times, using color and form to capture the essence of the flowers in an abstract but recognizable manner. No one had painted flowers in such a way before, and OâKeeffe is acknowledged as being one of the first of the American modernist artists.
OâKeeffe is quoted as saying, âNobody sees a flowerâreallyâit is so smallâwe havenât timeâand to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time. . . . So I said to myselfâIâll paint what I seeâwhat the flower is to me but Iâll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at itâI will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.â
OâKeeffe succeeded in making people notice her flowers. Her work hangs in many of the finest art museums of the world and commands high prices at auction. The Georgia OâKeeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is dedicated to her work.
